Minamata COP 4 resulted in progress


From 21 to March 25, 2022, held at Bali, Indonesia, the fourth Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention, which aims to protect health and the environment of anthropogenic mercury emissions and releases.

Several topics have been Covered: Effectiveness Evaluation Framework of the Convention, review of Annexes A and B on products to be mercury base and manufacturing processes in which mercury or mercury compounds are used.

Another question is the revision of Annexes A and B of the Convention, where the COP added; the phasing out of eight mercury-containing products, such as compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent lamps; cold cathode, photographic film and paper, as well as propellants for satellites.

The é The phase-out of dental amalgam has made substantial progress, with two additional measures to protect the most vulnerable populations from the use of bulk mercury by dental practitioners, as well as from dental amalgam for the treatment of the teeth of patients under 15 years of age, pregnant women and nursing women.

"You have achieved truly remarkable results today in bringing us closer to the goal of the Convention and beginning to break the cycle of misery that 'bring the mercury" ; said Monika Stankiewicz, Executive Secretary of the Minamata Convention, during the closing of the meeting.

Note that the parties supported the Secretariat in its efforts to mainstream gender into all activities, projects and programs undertaken under the Convention, including the development of an action plan on gender based on a roadmap.

According to Rosa Vivien Ratnawati, President of COP-4, mercury emissions know no national or continental borders. Therefore, resolving mercury-related issues requires strong cooperation. She

think this who has been realized during this COP will strategically strengthen the collective commitment to guarantee health and the well-being of our future generations.

Many voices of the company civil society, partner organizations and indigenous peoples have been heard during the plenary session. They "enriched the discussions by bringing their expertise and knowledge of the needs and realities on the ground" clarified Stankiewicz.

The fifth he session of the Conference of the Parties will meet in Geneva, Switzerland, from October 30 to November 3, 2023, under the Romanian Presidency.
