Meetings with fishing communities on the Togolese coasts


 

On Friday April 29 and May 06, 2022, a mission of the NGO “Friends of the Earth-Togo” held discussion meetings with fishermen.  This mission was composed of Cyril Mensah (Community Development Program Officer), C&e;cile Missiamenou (Gender Issues Officer) and Victorien Atchabi (Communication Officer Assistant).

The first mission brought together the fishermen  of Doévikopé and the second, those of the National Syndicate of Fishermen of Togo (SYNAPETO) respectively in the conference room of the Ibro-Fils hotel in Las Vegas. Baguida, and at the fishing port of Lomé (POPEL). These meetings are part of the preparation for the meeting of fishermen with the Minister of Maritime Economy and particularly with the Department of Fisheries. /p>

These are activities that are in line with the « no to exploitation of oil » implemented by Friends of the Earth-Togo. This phase of the project has two components.

The first part consists of work with fishermen, to establish a dialogue between fishing communities and the ministries in charge of the maritime economy, the environment and mines to deepen discussions on the impacts of the blue economy on fishermen and their subsistence activities.

As for the second; me shuttered, it will focus on the maritime economy and the energy transition at sea. know: gradually abandon fossil fuels in favor of renewable energies. The objective of this component is to facilitate exchanges between the communities affected by the exploration of oil and the government, at the same time. across
